Kathmandu is Nepal's beating heart โ a city where 12th-century temples share blocks with rooftop restaurants and trekking gear shops. The Kathmandu Valley contains seven individual UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath (Nepal's holiest Hindu temple), Boudhanath (one of Asia's largest Buddhist stupas), Swayambhunath (the ancient "Monkey Temple"), and the medieval Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.
Thamel โ the backpacker district โ offers everything from Tibetan singing bowl shops to Himalayan jazz bars. But wander beyond Thamel into Asan Tole, Indra Chowk, and the old city lanes to discover the real Kathmandu: incense sellers, fruit markets, women in red saris, and rooftop pigeons circling ancient stupas.
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) serves all international arrivals. Taxi to Thamel: $7โ10 (fixed rate). Pre-paid airport taxi booths are safest. Uber/InDriver also work from arrivals.
Thamel for budget to mid-range. Boutique Newari guesthouses in Patan Durbar Square for character. Lazimpat for business hotels. Nagarkot hills for mountain views (30 min outside city).
Yak Restaurant (Thamel) โ excellent momos. Krishnarpan (Dwarika's Hotel) โ 22-course Newari meal. Thamel House โ authentic local. Street momo stalls around Asan Tole.
Wear dust mask on busy days (air quality varies). Bargain at Thamel markets. Carry small Nepali rupee notes for temples. Dress modestly inside temples (cover shoulders and knees).
Pokhara sits at 820m in a wide valley with Phewa Lake at its centre and the Annapurna range โ including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993m) โ looming just 30km away. On clear mornings, the mountain reflections on the glassy lake are among the most photographed scenes in all of Asia.
As the gateway city to the Annapurna region (home to the world's most trekked mountain circuit), Pokhara is packed with trekking agencies, gear shops, and teahouse booking services. But it's also a destination in its own right โ Lakeside (Baidam) is a relaxed strip of cafรฉs, yoga studios, and lakeside restaurants where time slips away beautifully.
Chitwan National Park covers 932kmยฒ of subtropical jungle, grassland, and riverine forest along the NepalโIndia border. It was Nepal's first national park (1973) and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The park is home to around 700 one-horned rhinos (a conservation success story from near-extinction), 60+ Bengal tigers, and 68 mammal species.
The best base for visiting is Sauraha โ a small riverside town along the Rapti River opposite the park boundary. Most activities depart from here: jeep safaris, canoe rides on the river, guided jungle walks, elephant bathing, and evening cultural programmes by the Tharu community.
Bhaktapur ("City of Devotees") is the most intact medieval city in all of South Asia. While Kathmandu modernised rapidly, Bhaktapur has preserved its ancient Newari character โ cobblestone streets, multi-tiered pagoda temples, and elaborately wood-carved buildings untouched for 500+ years. The city feels like a living museum, and the best way to appreciate it is simply to wander and get lost.
The three main squares โ Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, and Pottery Square โ each have their own distinct character. Don't miss the famous 55-Window Palace, the 5-storey Nyatapola Temple, and the Peacock Window (considered the finest wood carving in Nepal). Before leaving, sit at a local shop and taste Juju Dhau โ Bhaktapur's legendary king curd, served in clay pots.
Nagarkot is a peaceful hilltop village and hill station perched above the Kathmandu Valley at 2,175m. On clear mornings โ which are most reliable October through April โ the views stretch across an extraordinary 160km arc of Himalayan peaks, from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga on the eastern horizon, with Everest (8,848m) visible as a distinct pyramid in the centre.
Most visitors arrive in the afternoon, stay overnight, then wake at 5:30am to walk up the short hilltop path for sunrise. The walk down to Bhaktapur (3โ4 hours) makes for a perfect day โ combining Nagarkot sunrise with a Bhaktapur afternoon. Many hotels have viewing towers and heated rooms for cold winter visits.
Lumbini is where, in 563 BC, Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama beneath a sal tree. The young prince would renounce his royal life, seek enlightenment, and become the Buddha โ one of the most influential figures in human history. The sacred site was "rediscovered" by Nepali archaeologists in 1895 and confirmed by a stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC.
Today, Lumbini hosts over 30 monasteries from Buddhist nations worldwide โ each with distinct architecture, from Myanmar's golden pagodas to Korea's modern zen temples to Tibet's butter lamp shrines. The centrepiece Maya Devi Temple marks the exact birthplace, and the sacred Puskarini Pool (bathing pond) is mentioned in ancient texts. Walking the peaceful monastery zone at dawn or dusk is one of Nepal's most profound experiences.
