Nepal's first major trekking season. Rhododendron forests explode in colour, skies stay clear before the monsoon builds, and temperatures across all elevations are ideal for hiking. April is widely regarded as the single best month to visit Nepal.
Rhododendrons begin blooming from mid-month. Skies are clear, temperatures ideal at all elevations. EBC and ABC routes are both in excellent condition. Lower trails can see rain by late March.
The single best month to visit Nepal. Warm days, cool nights, rhododendrons in full bloom, and crystal clear mountain views. Nepal celebrates Nepali New Year (Baisakh). EBC summit season begins. Book 3 months ahead.
Late spring brings warmer temperatures and increasing afternoon clouds. Buddha Jayanti (Buddha's birthday) is celebrated in May. Pre-monsoon rains can affect lower routes. Good deals as crowds thin from April peak.
Nepal's most popular season and arguably the finest trekking window on earth. The monsoon washes the skies clean, leaving crystal-clear views and freshly re-opened trails. Add Nepal's biggest festivals — Dashain and Tihar — and you have an unmissable combination.
Transition month as monsoon winds down. Early September can still see rain, but by late September trails reopen beautifully. Landscapes are intensely green and fresh. A well-kept secret for savvy trekkers who want autumn conditions at shoulder prices.
The most celebrated month in Nepal. Crystal-clear skies, perfect trekking temperatures, and Nepal's biggest festivals. Dashain (the 15-day harvest festival) fills villages with colour, music, and family reunions. EBC and ABC trails are at their absolute best.
Excellent trekking with slightly fewer crowds than October. Tihar (Festival of Lights) falls in late October/early November — the most visually stunning festival in Nepal. Nights get cold at altitude but days remain clear and crisp. Often better value than October.
Nepal's shoulder/off season brings its coldest temperatures — but also its lowest prices, emptiest trails, and some of the clearest mountain views of the year. An excellent time for lower elevation treks, cultural tours, and budget travellers who don't mind packing an extra layer.
Christmas sees a mini surge of Western travellers in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Otherwise quiet and peaceful. Excellent visibility for mountain views on clear days. High passes may close due to snow — stick to routes below 3,500m. Poon Hill is magical in winter.
Coldest month but surprisingly rewarding. Mountain views can be absolutely crystal clear on sunny winter days. Kathmandu cultural sites are easy to explore without crowds. Trekking is possible below 3,000m with proper gear. Everest region is cold but functional.
Nepal begins warming up. Rhododendrons start at lower elevations by late February, signalling the approaching spring. Valentine's Day brings a small uptick in Pokhara. Conditions are improving and it's a great "early bird" window before prices rise sharply in March.
Nepal's monsoon season is challenging but not impossible. While main trekking routes suffer from rain, leeches and landslide risk, the rain-shadow regions of Upper Mustang and Dolpo remain largely dry. Kathmandu culture trips deliver excellent value. Landscapes are impossibly lush and green.
Monsoon arrives mid-June. Upper Mustang permits ($500) become worthwhile as the rest of Nepal drowns. Leeches appear on lower trails. Kathmandu temples are beautifully uncrowded. First weeks of June still manageable for experienced trekkers on well-cleared routes.
Peak monsoon. Heavy and persistent rainfall throughout the country. Upper Mustang and Dolpo are the only viable trekking areas. Kathmandu valley itself is lush and green — cultural sightseeing with warm temperatures and uncrowded monuments. Guru Purnima (full moon festival) is celebrated in July.
Still heavy monsoon but beginning to ease towards late August. Krishna Janmashtami and Teej (Women's Festival) are celebrated with colour and song in Kathmandu's Pashupatinath. Brave trekkers targeting September should plan to arrive late August to acclimatise in Kathmandu.
